Speyside
The largest in terms of whisky production and most world-renowned region is Speyside, producing a range of single malts whose names are instantly recognisable, even to non-whisky drinkers; Macallan, Glenfiddich, Glenfarclas, Glenlivet etc. The area is concentrated around the Elgin-Dufftown district although it it encompasses the entire Spey river valley.
Speyside whiskies are recognised as being mellow with a malty sweetness and light notes of peat: beyond this basic generalisation lies a wealth of variety and subtlety and the Speyside malts can range from aromatic and flowery to the robust and sherried. Whiskies can be found in this area to satisfy all palates from the novice to the connoisseur and for all occasions.
